School-Based Health Center
Providing convenient in-school medical, dental, and behavioral health care for students in Rockbridge County.
Rockbridge Area Health Center (RAHC) in coordination with Rockbridge County Public Schools (RCPS) is bringing healthcare to students. Our clinics are at Maury River Middle School and Rockbridge County High School and are operated by our licensed professional staff who can examine, diagnose, and treat various health issues. Our intent is not to replace your current primary care provider but to address health needs in a convenient location for students and families. Our staff will work in collaboration with the school staff to offer much-needed services that will help keep children and staff members healthy in school and avoid disrupting parent’s workday.
The dental services will be provided as they have been for the previous 12 years at your child’s school by licensed dental hygienists and dentists.
In addition to dental services, we will also be providing medical and behavioral health services.
Medical and behavioral health will be available at Maury River Middle School and Rockbridge County High School, but all RCPS students are eligible to receive services.
For your child to receive these services, parents/guardians must provide ALL of THE INFORMATION requested on the registration form.

By law we are required to restrict full access to medical records, including the patient portal, to parents when the patient turns 13. Patients may authorize full medical record access to parents by signing an authorization form.
At age 18, proxy access will end. However, patients can grant access again by filling out a new form.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a school-based health center (SBHC)?
A school-based health center is a clinic located inside a school. It helps students stay healthy by offering medical care, including urgent and chronic care, wellness visits, as well as behavioral and mental health services, like counseling. This makes it easier for students to get the care they need without missing school.
Who can use the SBHC?
The SBHC is available to students and their families as well as school staff.
Where are the SBHCs located? What are the hours of operation?
SBHCs are at Rockbridge County High School and Maury River Middle School. The clinics are open during school hours on the designated days indicated above.
What services does the SBHC offer?
Medical: Services provided are physical exams, vaccinations, care and treatment of injury or illness, routine lab tests, nutrition services, care for pediatric and adolescent health concerns, care for chronic conditions (asthma, ADHD, diabetes, etc.)
Behavioral Health: Behavioral and mental health assessment, screening and intervention, individual and small group counseling, and drug or alcohol use treatment.
Oral Health: Routine dental exams, x-rays, sealants, prophylaxis (teeth cleaning), and fluoride treatments.
Additionally, referrals are provided for services not offered at SBHC.
How does a student receive services?
To receive services, parents or guardians must complete the SBHC Enrollment packet and return it to the school nurse. Enrollment in the SBHC program can be completed at any time. There are NO eligibility requirements. All parents are encouraged to enroll their child in the SBHC program. Signing an enrollment form does not mean that your child must use the School-Based Health Center. Enrolling your child gives you the option of using the SBHC when you need it.
Appointments may be scheduled by:
- Calling the SBHC located in your child’s school:
- Rockbridge County High School: 540-464-8700 ext. 8767
- Maury River Middle School: 540-464-8700 ext. 7343
- Coordinating with the school guidance counselor or school nurse
What are the payment options?
All students receive services regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Medicaid and private insurance are accepted forms of payment. If your child doesn’t have insurance, RAHC staff can help you apply for insurance or financial assistance, and we can connect you with other community resources as needed. Financial assistance is available to patients based on family size and household income.
Is the SBHC replacing my child’s doctor?
If your child already has a doctor, then the School Based Health Center staff will work along with the care that your child’s doctor provides. If needed, the School-Based Health Center staff will talk to your child’s doctor to make sure your child gets the best care both in and out of school.
